India Through Flickr – Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh, the most populous state in India, is the next stop in our journey across India through Flickr. This is a big state, the fifth largest state in India, to be precise, and home to many famous Indian cities: Lucknow (capital), Varanasi, Mathura, Agra, Kanpur, Haridwar, Meerut, Ayodhya, Sarnath, Mussorie, and Dehra Dun.
Located in Uttar Pradesh are some of the holiest Hindu cities: Varanasi, Ayodhya, Mathura, Haridwar and Allahabad, along the two holiest Hindu rivers: Ganga and Yamuna. This is also where over 10 million Hindus gather every twelve years, for the famous Kumbha Mela.
Historically, Uttar Pradesh was also a prominent region during the Mughal rule, and home to the Taj Mahal, and other Mughal architectural wonders. It is also the location of Sarnath, the place where Buddha gave his first sermon after his enlightenment. The Ashoka Pillar and the Lion Capital, both national symbols of India, are located in Sarnath.
Uttar Pradesh has always been a hot spot for photographers from around the world, and it was no big surprise to find a good collection of photographs related to Uttar Pradesh on Flickr. There were a lot to choose from, and probably a lot more that I missed, but here are a few that will give you a good picture of this timeless state:
